Manage performance

Performance management does NOT equal an annual review. To effectively manage performance, managers must be skilled at setting goals and expectations, giving on-going informal feedback, correcting performance that is below standards, and evaluating employee performance. A well conducted annual review improves retention, so it is also an important skill for a manager.

Manager effectiveness is a key element for a well functioning performance management process. Once the company grows, there are additional aspects that make performance management efficient. The company can drive both cohesive culture and clear performance standards by creating a set of core competencies, or behavior standards for all employees. Consistent performance rating standards become necessary. Automating the performance management system removes a lot of manual hassle for managers and HR, and enables better company-level analytics.

However, the strongest driver behind effective performance management is the company culture. Does it promote shared goals, open feedback and frank discussions instead of focusing on blaming others and covering yourself? Building a high performance culture has a profound impact on the work environment and the company results.
